Ovación para los 5 Cubanos al recibir Premio por los Derechos Humanos en EE.UU

El Palacio de Bellas Artes, conocido monumento cercano a la entrada a la bahía de San Francisco, abrió sus puertas a la Duodécima Premiación por los Derechos Humanos de Global Exchange. La estructura palaciega fue originalmente construida para la exposición Panamá-Pacífico 1915 y para exhibir obras de arte, pero anoche su propósito fue reconocer y rendir homenaje a los luchadores por la paz, la justicia y un mundo mejor.   

Nominados por el Comité Internacional por la Libertad de los 5 Cubanos a propuesta de Global Exchange, este año los 5 antiterroristas cubanos fueron los ganadores en la categoría Premio Seleccionado por la Gente.

Ted Lewis, Director del Programa por los Derechos Humanos de Global Exchange quien hizo la presentación del premio a los Cinco, dijo que más de 29.000 personas entraron a la página web del Premio Selecciono por la Gente para votar entre los diferentes candidatos, y que los Cinco fueron los que obtuvieron la mayor cantidad de votos en esa categoría.

María Eugenia Guerrero conocida cariñosamente por sus familiares y amigos como Maruchi, hermana de Antonio Guerrero recibió el premio en nombre de los Cinco. Esta es la primera vez que un familiar de los 5 Cubanos habla públicamente en nombre de ellos en los Estados Unidos. 

Antes de presentar a Maruchi, Lewis manifestó que los Cinco definitivamente se merecieron el premio y para explicar brevemente el caso presentó un video del actor Danny Glover quien describe quienes son los Cinco y cual fue su misión en EEUU. Lewis dijo que Obama puede liberarlos y agregó "él no comenzó este desastre pero lo puede terminar" y procedió a presentar a Maruchi. 

Mientras ella caminaba hacia el escenario para recibir el premio, el público se puso de pie aplaudiéndola y ovacionando la dignidad de los Cinco y sus familias, en expresión de apoyo y solidaridad. La reacción espontanea de la audiencia significó que se ha logrado llegar a más personas, los esfuerzos por llevar este caso a la luz del día están dando grandes avances.  

Maruchi agradeció a Global Exchange por haber considerado la inclusión de los Cinco en esta convocatoria explicando que si bien los Cinco han recibido importantes premios en muchos países del mundo, esta es la primera vez que se otorga en los Estados Unidos y el hecho de que sea un premio por los Derechos Humanos cobra mayor relevancia. Agregó que su madre Mirta tiene ya 82 años de edad,y el tiempo no se detiene. "Ella dedica cada minuto de su vida defendiendo la causa de los Cinco y su mayor deseo es ver a su hijo Antonio, a Gerardo y a Ramón libres junto a sus familias y en su Patria".

Maruchi terminó su intervención haciendo un llamado a los presentes a sumarse a la Jornada "5 días para los 5 Cubanos" en Washington, DC del 4 al 10 de junio.
Además del premio a los Cinco, Global Exchange entregó el Premio Nacional en honor al 50 Aniversario de las Escuelas de la Libertad. Charlie Cobb, visionario de las Escuelas de la Libertad Phillip Agnew, Director Ejecutivo de Defensores de Sueños recibieron el Premio Nacional.  

En el evento María Estela Barco Huerta, activista conocida por sus actividades contra las semillas genéticamente modificadas, que ha jugado un papel destacado en la organización de intercambios de aprendizaje de agroecología en Chiapas –México, recibió el Premio Internacional.

Ovation for the Cuban 5 to receive Human Rights Award in USA

The Palace of Fine Arts, known monument near the entrance to San Francisco Bay , opened to the Twelfth Human Rights Award by Global Exchange. The palatial structure was originally built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific exhibition and display artworks, but last night their purpose was to recognize and pay tribute to the fighters for peace , justice and a better world.

Nominated by the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5 proposed by Global Exchange, this year the 5 Cuban anti-terrorists were the winners in the Competition Selected People.

Ted Lewis , Program Director for Human Rights Global Exchange who presented the award to the Five, said more than 29,000 people entered the web page I select Award by the People to vote between the different candidates, and that the five were the ones who got the most votes in that category.

María Eugenia Guerrero affectionately known by family and friends as Maruchi , sister of Antonio Guerrero received the award on behalf of the Five. This is the first time a relative of the Cuban 5 speaks publicly on behalf of them in the United States.

Before introducing Maruchi , Lewis said that the Five definitely deserved the prize and to explain briefly the case presented a video of the actor Danny Glover who describes who the Five and what was his mission in USA . Lewis said Obama can release them and said " he did not start this mess but we can end " and proceeded to introduce Maruchi .

As she walked onto the stage to receive the award , the audience rose to applaud standing and cheering to the dignity of the Five and their families , in an expression of support and solidarity. The spontaneous reaction of the audience meant that managed to reach more people , efforts to bring this case to daylight are making great progress .

Global Exchange Maruchi thanked for considering the inclusion of the five in this call explaining that while five have received awards in many countries, this is the first time that is granted in the United States and the fact that it award for Human Rights becomes more important . He said his mother Mirta has already 82 years old , and the clock is ticking . " She spends every minute of his life defending the cause of the Five and his biggest wish is to see his son Antonio, Gerardo and Ramón free with their families and their country."

Maruchi concluded by calling on those present to join the conference " 5 days for the Cuban 5 " in Washington, DC from 4 to 10 June.

Besides the award to the Five Global Exchange presented the National Award in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Freedom Schools . Charlie Cobb , visionary Schools Freedom Phillip Agnew , Executive Director of Advocates Dreams received the National Award .
