(English version at the end of the text)

American TV star involved in restoration of Hemingway Museum in Cuba

By Andrew Cotto, Men 's Journal

Bob Vila is an icon of American television. For nearly 30 years , hosted programs This Old House, Home Again , Restore America , which helped the audience to restore their homes, this task became a national pastime , and made of the cottage industry big business. What many people do not know is how has used his knowledge to the preservation of architecture. Vila has worked with organizations Peace Corps and Habitat for Humanity , but his current project takes him to work with the Cuban government to preserve the heritage of Ernest Hemingway.

Vila has been deeply involved in the restoration of Finca Vigia , richly decorated house in Cuba that Ernest Hemingway bought in the early forties, after marrying Martha Gellhorn , his third wife . There Hemingway completed For Whom the Bell Tolls and wrote The Old Man and the Sea , and the estate was converted into a museum after the suicide of the writer. Work at home and around Vila has given the opportunity to spend time on the island, get in touch with her Cuban roots , and rediscover some of the forgotten treasures Pope .

How did you get involved in the effort to restore the Finca Vigia ?I got involved with Finca Vigia Foundation eight years ago after having a long conversation with a good friend in Cambridge who, like me , was disconnected from his Cuban roots for decades. The last time I visited the island was in 1958 when he was 12 years old. She explained the impact of his first visit to this house and why he love the place , people and culture. I was invited to be part of this project and have produced my first trip to Cuba as a construction expert .

What has been your role in the project ?In particular , should consult the Cuban team in Finca Vigia to determine the extent to which the invasion of termites has affected the guesthouse. My role in the project quickly ended in a friendship with the staff that has generated confidence and makes our relationship successful . We are the only U.S. cultural group with a formal agreement with the Ministry of Culture of Cuba and its Institute for Protection of Cultural Heritage .

Our founder , Jenny Phillips, initially visited the site to find out if his grandfather 's correspondence with Ernest Hemingway still existed. Max Perkins was the editor of Scribner who worked closely with EH , and was the grandfather of Jenny . She and the rest of the team have built this trust relationship over the years and our greatest achievement is to have helped the security of the house and collections .

How are you involved in the restoration process ?The guest house I examined in my first visit was built by Hemingway to his children could visit and not under the same roof. He also served as a garage for your convertible Chrysler. That car was lost for decades, but reappeared in the last two years and is being restored. The guest house was a mess and still used as staff offices . When the Cubans let me in there I felt a bit like Lord Carnarvon at the opening of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamen . In the gloom were rows of African trophies, stacks of boxes and luggage and a booth in a corner was the typewriter Pope.

The board is still chaotic, but plans are underway to get an exact replica , along with a new building for a conservation laboratory and offices for staff. The pool and cabana also be restored .
Is there a general awareness of the value of Finca Vigia in Cuba ?Finca Vigia is unique and remains the largest cultural attraction for international visitors to Cuba .

Will you continue to participate in Finca Vigia , once restoration is complete ?I intend to continue to participate in the project because it gives me a reason to keep working with the Cubans. My last family member still living in Havana died last year , but due to this project feel that I still have family there.
I'm much more connected with my Cuban heritage than I thought. Music and food have always been with me , but get to know the streets of Havana and landscapes of the interior are of great value to me . I've been there many times and have brought my wife and daughters and I hope to bring my son and his young family to visit this place soon.

Are you optimistic about the Cuban -American relations ?The people to people cultural exchange is stronger than ever, and even though we have a long way to go , I know that eventually the lock will die of atrophy.

Is there any good TV show today that you consider interesting?House of Cards ( House of Cards ) is the only program I'm watching .
