Tom Jones paseó y cantó en La Habana

El popular cantante y actor británico Tom Jones, de visita en Cuba a propósito del Festival del Habano, conversó el jueves con estudiantes y profesores de la Escuela Nacional de Ballet.

 En declaraciones ofrecidas a Prensa Latina, el vicedirector general de la institución, Enrique Ferrer, dijo que durante su visita, el artista cantó a capella con los niños su célebre Dalilah, uno de los temas que lo hicieron famoso en la década del 60 del pasado siglo.

 El caballero de la corona británica, orden otorgada en 2006 por la reina Isabel II en reconocimiento a su trabajo como artista, disfrutó del Grand Pas de Paquita, interpretado por un grupo de jóvenes bailarines.

 Los más pequeños, por su parte, bailaron fragmentos de El principito, una obra que cuenta con la coreografía de la maestra de la Escuela Nacional de Ballet Laura Domingo.

 Para la cena de gala y la subasta anual del Festival Internacional del Habano, el viernes, los organizadores invitaron a la isla al cantante británico Tom Jones que interpretó algunas de sus canciones para amenizar la noche.

 “Amo los cigarros cubanos”, dijo Jones. “Nunca antes había estado en Cuba. Entonces esta fue una maravillosa oportunidad para venir”, agregó.

 Dueño de una gran voz, capaz de interpretar todos los estilos de música popular, pop, rock, country, dance y tecno, Jones inició su trayectoria artística en 1963 como vocalista del grupo Tommy Scott & The Senators.

 En 1965 le llegó su primer gran éxito con la canción No es raro, y ese mismo año conquistó un premio Grammy como Mejor artista nuevo.

 Tras la muerte de su manager Gordon Mills en 1986, su hijo Mark relanzó su carrera, volviendo a ocupar posiciones importantes en las listas de popularidad con el tema A boy from nowhere.

 En 2003 obtuvo el premio Brit Awards por su contribución a la música, reconocimiento al que se suman otros, en una carrera que aún se mantiene activa y atesora una treintena de discos grabados y más de 100 millones de copias vendidas en el mundo.

 Según los críticos, el estilo de El Tigre de Gales cautiva a muchos por su voz cálida y, al mismo tiempo, caudalosa, algo muy poco frecuente en un cantante popular.
