Niño inventor: Un Da Vinci en Cuba

Para la identidad no dispone de más aval que su condición de inventor y la admiración por el genio italiano. Entró en la vida un 25 diciembre, hace ya 12 años, llamándose Rodrigo. Llegó con pelo negro, lacio, tez blanquísima y, poco tiempo después, su mirada noble se pondría detrás de unos cristales discretos.
“Este taladra y camina. Fue uno de mis primeros inventos”, dice sacando sus artefactos de una estación de trabajo creada por él. “Tengo también un carro con control remoto que terminé hace pocos días, y estoy haciendo un tanque, pero necesito más piezas. Este otro es más bien como un perro, pero le falta trabajo todavía. Mis robots son todos móviles. Ah, mira, este es un helicóptero”.
Cables eléctricos, baterías, interruptores, cautín, destornilladores, pinzas… no se cuentan entre los “juguetes” más populares de los niños en Cuba y probablemente en el resto del mundo. Rodrigo no los usa precisamente para jugar, aunque lo divierten y llenan sus horas en soledad como las de sus contemporáneos se ocupan con una pelota, con videojuegos, dibujos o televisión.
Cuando, en 4to grado, “inventó por primera vez”, la madre hizo un libro para él. El padre le regaló herramientas y le enseñó a hacer un circuito. Desde entonces la faena no le merece menos que apasionamiento.
El cuento de la creación
Desde chiquito me gustaba desarmar las cosas, ver qué tenían dentro. También me motivó ver un niño que hizo un ventilador. Entonces yo también lo hice, empecé con un motor y una batería. Así empecé a recopilar cosas.
Utilizo cualquier equipo electrónico roto, lo mismo un teléfono celular que un reloj plástico. Uso también juguetes viejos, no importa: con las piezas se puede hacer cualquier cosa. A veces me encuentro objetos por la calle, los recojo –despuésme lavo las manos, por supuesto–, los desarmo y hago algo.
Me gusta reutilizar piezas porque ayudo al medio ambiente y porque uno nunca sabe qué pueda encontrarse. Además, dejarlas tiradas ahí no creo que valga la pena. Esto era un pedazo de basura, y hoy por hoy es un robot que camina.
Como me gusta crear, a veces dibujo antes lo que quiero hacer y me voy guiando; pero otras no me gusta hacer los planos, hay que tenerlo todo en la mente, y mis inventos son lo único que a mí no se me olvida.
A veces busco primero las piezas, después me lo voy imaginando. A mí me gusta experimentar, entonces empiezo a ver cómo son aparatos parecidos y veo todo lo que tienen. También le pongo cosas para decorarlo. Incluso hago inventos que no hacen nada, solo por decoración. Me puede tomar hasta un año hacer uno si necesito buscar información. Además, algunas cosas son difíciles de conseguir en estado útil.
Hacer esto me hace feliz, también porque me tranquiliza mucho. Es como un medio de diversión para mí. Cuando lo estoy haciendo me siento emocionado, porque no sé si va a salir bien, si va a salir mal, si voy a descubrir algo nuevo…
Mira, tengo este ratón, que no funciona, pero me gusta tenerlo porque es mi primer invento… y mi primer fracaso. Eso me hizo experimentar.
Todos mis inventos me gustan, porque les pongo espíritu como si tuvieran vida. Me gusta haberlos creado yo. No me gusta querer a uno más que a otro, aunque solo uno tiene nombre: Rex.
Pero no estoy seguro de querer que tuvieran vida propia, porque podríamos acomodarnos a que hicieran todo por nosotros. ¿Y si hubiera robots con su propia memoria y se “reviran”? ¿Y si pudieran sentir? Podrían sufrir o virarse contra nosotros. Pienso mucho en eso. Antes me gustaba la idea, pero ya no tanto.
Exposición
Los que se pueden llevar a la escuela –que no son todos, porque no quiero que se me rompan– los llevo. Hay gente que no me cree, que dice que yo estoy loco y que no los hice. Pero como yo sé que sí los hice y que los puedo seguir haciendo…
También hay gente que viene de visita a la casa, y les enseño todo esto y se quedan impresionados.
Yo soy inventor. Sé que es muy difícil encontrar alguien como yo, pero me gustaría intercambiar ideas con esa persona, intercambiar piezas… Yo he conocido personas mayores, pero ya no hacen este tipo de cosas sino otras más complejas, y todos mis robots son chiquiticos. Para hacer uno grande necesitaría muchas cosas, muchos carros rotos para desarmar, por ejemplo. Y un robot tamaño natural es más complicado. Siempre empezaría con algo de cuatro patas, un perro o un tigre; pero tengo que descubrir cómo hacer la coordinación de las patas. Hasta ahora nada más he hecho cosas con ruedas.
Proyecto a largo plazo
Me gustaría trabajar en la electrónica, la robótica; estudiar una carrera que tenga que ver con esto. Pero principalmente me gustaría inventar algo:
Mira, cuando lanzan los cohetes desde la Tierra para poner un satélite, dejan los residuos. Son cuatro capas de los cohetes que se quedan allá arriba. Me gustaría inventar algo que recogiera esa basura, porque si se va acumulando por mucho tiempo, podría llegar a ser como una capa que se pueden quedar ahí o ponerse alrededor de la Tierra u otro planeta, una capa que el Sol no pudiese atravesar y se congelaría esa parte del planeta.
También estuviéramos recuperando material, porque de eso estaríamos extrayendo hierro, cobre y todo tipo de metales que se pueden acabar y así se pueden reutilizar en otros cohetes o en cualquier objeto útil.
La puerta a las fórmulas
Mi papá me enseñó cómo hacer los interruptores. Me ayudó en cómo conectar un motor también. Cuando yo estaba empezando él me ayudó mucho; pero ya no porque me fui desarrollando, creciendo.
Algunas cosas las aprendo en documentales, otras en un libro que me armó mi mamá cuando yo estaba en 5to grado, con cosas de mecánica, física, electrónica. Los documentales es lo más fácil. Hay muchos que me gustan porque son sobre gente como yo, que hace cosas. Además, no hay muchos libros aquí sobre este tema.
A veces hay cosas que quiero saber y en la escuela no puedo aprenderlas, así que las busco. Si hay algún libro sobre eso en la biblioteca, me pongo a leerlo. La bibliotecaria de la escuela me ayuda.
También aprendo con la gente. Me gusta hablar con toda la gente porque soy muy curioso, y entonces les pregunto. Siempre me gusta saber más. Me gusta tener conocimientos cuando voy a hacer algo, aunque a veces no quiero que me enseñen algunas cosas para descubrirlas yo solo.
Rodrigo y Leonardo
Mi figura preferida es Leonardo Da Vinci porque era artista, botánico, trabajaba muchas cosas. Y era un hombre de verdad: sabía pensar. Los hombres de verdad son aquellos que no son ignorantes; los que pueden hacer cosas por sí solos y son independientes; los que pueden lograr que el mundo sea mejor.
Admiro mucho todo lo que hizo. No ser una persona de su época, ignorante, tener los conocimientos, saber experimentar, ser independiente y tratar de ayudar al mundo.
Siempre he pensado que seguramente me hubiera gustado vivir en otra época, pero ese es un problema porque no se pueden alterar el tiempo y el espacio. En la Edad Media me hubiera gustado, pero entre gente como yo, que eran considerados locos. A los reyes no les gustaba que supieran más que ellos, porque no querían que nadie tuviera más poder que ellos, por eso no permitían que leyeran libros, los quemaban.
Pero en esta época me siento normal, como un niño corriente, no quiero que mis amigos me vean de una manera que los aparte de mí. Yo solo invento, me alimento de eso, me gusta conocer más de lo que conozco. Y si no fuera inventor, no sería nada.

Boy Genius : A Da Vinci in Cuba

Sometimes looking parts first , then what I ’m imagining . I like experimenting, then I start to see how they are similar devices and see everything they have. I also put things to decorate. Even I do inventions that do nothing , just for decoration. I can take a year to make one if I need to search for information. Also, some things are hard to get in good condition.
Doing this makes me happy, because I also very reassuring . It’s like an amusement to me. When I’m doing I ’m excited because I do not know if it will be okay , if you go wrong, if I ’m going to find something new ...

All my inventions like me because I put spirit as having life. Like I have created them . I hate to love one more than another , though only one has a name: Rex.

My dad taught me how to make the switches. It helped in connecting an engine also . When I was starting it helped me a lot ; but not anymore because I was developing , growing.
Some things we learn in documentaries , others put together a book that my mom when I was in 5th grade, with things mechanical , physics, electronics . The documentary is the easiest. There are many that I like because they are about people like me who does things . Also, there are not many books on this subject here .
Sometimes there are things I want to know the school and can not learn , so the search . If there is a book about it in the library, I get to read it. The school librarian helps me .
I also learn with people. I like talking to all the people because I’m very curious, and then ask them . I always like to know more. I like to have knowledge when I go to do something , but sometimes I do not want to teach me some things to discover myself.
Rodrigo and Leonardo
My favorite figure is Leonardo Da Vinci because he was an artist, botanist, worked a lot. And it was a real man : he knew thinking. Real men are those who are not ignorant ; those who can do things for themselves and are independent ; those who can make the world better .
I admire what he did. Not being a person of his age , ignorant, have the knowledge, skills experience , be independent and try to help the world.
I always thought that I would surely like to live in another era , but that’s a problem because you can not alter time and space. In the Middle Ages would have liked , but between people like me, who were considered crazy. A kings did not like them to know more than them because they did not want anyone to have more power than them, so they were not allowed to read books, burned .
